Tarheeb Still’s second NFL offseason has been anything but quiet. The former fifth-round pick out of Maryland is not only competing for a larger role in the Los Angeles Chargers’ secondary — he’s steadily earning it.

According to Eric Smith of Chargers.com, Still is “turning heads” at minicamp despite not registering an interception in open practices. He’s consistently forced turnovers, getting his hands on passes to set up takeaway opportunities for teammates.

What’s more notable than his stat line, however, is his transformation off the field.

“Tarheeb has done a great job of maturing,” Chargers defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale said. “Overnight it just seems like he’s a different person … He accepts coaching and criticism in a different way.”

That maturity has come, in part, from working closely with nine-time Pro Bowler Khalil Mack. Still joined Mack every Friday this offseason for training sessions that began at 9 a.m. — though he knew Mack was always there earlier.

“Khalil is just showing me how to be intentional,” Still said. “Every day, taking advantage of small incremental gains to get to where I want to be.”

Still has also continued to work closely with Justin Herbert during the week, further strengthening his football IQ. His commitment is translating to the field: he’s seen reps at outside corner and in the slot, defending top targets like Ladd McConkey with poise and discipline.

With Derwin James Jr. anchoring the secondary and embracing a hybrid nickel-safety role, the unit’s identity is sharpening under Jesse Minter. According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, the DB rotation is coming into focus, with Still earning reps alongside Donte Jackson, Tony Jefferson, and Alohi Gilman.

There’s no guarantee of a starting spot, but Clinkscale isn’t ruling anything out.

“Nobody has a spot,” he said. “We want to see who’s going to earn it.”

Still, so far, is earning every bit of his.
