The Los Angeles Chargers have had a bit of an underwhelming free agency period so far. But just because fans have not been over the moon, does not mean that they have done nothing.
Before this evening, their biggest move was probably re-signing star pass rusher Khalil Mack to a one-year deal. They also brought in running back Najee Harris, which signaled the end of both J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards (released) as LA Chargers.
They created a little buzz when they brought back long-time Bolt WR Mike Williams, but with so much cap space, it has left a lot to be desired, thus far.
That certainly changed a bit on Friday Night when the news broke that they signed Super Bowl-winning guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year deal worth $20 million.

Los Angeles Chargers Sign Guard Mekhi Becton

Becton was drafted in the first round (pick 11) of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He was drafted as a tackle and made his debut in his rookie season. Like most players within the Jets organization in the last two decades, he did not live up to his draft hype and was viewed as a bust.
After an injury-riddled four seasons with the Jets, he signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. The team was set at the tackle position, so instead of settling as a depth piece, Becton moved inside to guard and ended up winning the starting job.
He finished the season with a 70.7 overall blocking grade, per PFF, and became a Super Bowl champion.
Standing at 6’7 and weighing 363 pounds, Becton is a monster of a human being. He will likely play right guard next to right tackle Joe Alt. Alt is 6’8, 322 pounds, so it is safe to say the right side of the line will be massive.

Since he has demonstrated just one season of success, this isn’t a complete home run signing, but depending on the contract figures (not yet released), it is a very good one. The Los Angeles Chargers needed to upgrade the interior of the line, and this signing does just that.
Trey Pipkins played right guard last year after transitioning from tackle, similar to Becton. He did not have the same success as a starter but is a solid depth piece that has versatility.
The Los Angeles Chargers still have quite a lot of cap space available, still roughly $60 million according to Over The Cap (this contract most likely not included yet in that figure), so they have the opportunity to add more impact players, but they took care of the position that arguably needed the most help.
