Los Angeles Chargers’ Recent Top Draft Pick At Risk of Losing Roster Spot

Now that the dust has settled on the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers are getting closer to formulating their initial 90-man roster. Of course, their recent draft class will play a major part, and the newcomers will inevitably take the jobs of existing players on the roster.

In some cases, it could mean the end of the line for other recent draft picks. In fact, The Athletic’s Daniel Popper now believes former Chargers first-round pick Quentin Johnston’s roster spot could be in danger.

“Johnston, a first-round pick under the previous regime, is going to have to earn his roster spot in camp.”

It only makes sense that Johnston would be at risk of losing his roster spot. After all, he was drafted by decision-makers who no longer work for the Chargers.

Yet, as the 21st overall pick from 2023, one would think Johnston’s leash would be a bit longer than some of his peers. Especially considering he’s coming off a career-best 711 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

That type of production should be enough to earn Johnston strong consideration to secure another roster spot. Yet, Johnston will be in direct competition with the likes of Ladd McConkey, second-round rookie Tre Harris, and Mike Williams.

Ultimately, if Johnston falls to fourth or worse on the depth chart, perhaps the Chargers would be better off seeing what type of trade return they can get for the 23-year-old former first-round pick.
