Insider Opens Door For Los Angeles Chargers To Secure All-Pro At Big Position Of Need

As Los Angeles Chargers minicamp wraps and the offseason calms ahead of training camps, one of the league’s most intriguing sagas remains unresolved: the future of Jalen Ramsey. The Miami Dolphins and the seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback have mutually agreed to part ways, and while a trade has long been expected, no deal has materialized.

That may change soon. ESPN’s Adam Schefter, speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, said he expects a resolution before training camp and hinted at Ramsey’s preferred destination.

“I think he would like to go to the West Coast,” Schefter said. “Rams, Chargers, somewhere like that.”

While the Los Angeles Rams have remained the most publicized suitor, their head coach Sean McVay acknowledged last week that “real obstacles” could prevent a reunion—namely, salary and timing. Ramsey is owed $21.1 million in 2025, with $20 million guaranteed, making him a difficult mid-offseason fit for many cap-strapped contenders.

The Chargers, however, quietly loom as a viable alternative. With nearly $28 million in projected cap space, they have the financial flexibility to absorb Ramsey’s deal—unlike the Rams, who may require Miami to retain salary. Los Angeles could likely land the 30-year-old for minimal draft capital, given the Dolphins’ urgency to offload his contract.

Still, whether they should pursue Ramsey is another matter. He’s coming off a solid, but not elite, season in Miami and will turn 31 before the 2025 campaign. The Bolts have already invested in the position, adding Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste while developing promising young talent like Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart

New head coach Jim Harbaugh may also prefer to let that group grow together rather than bring in a veteran on a steep deal.

Ramsey would undoubtedly bring experience and physicality to a Chargers defense in transition—but whether Harbaugh and GM Joe Hortiz want to take on his financial baggage remains unclear.

If Miami agrees to eat some salary, a late-offseason trade could come together. Until then, the Chargers are a logical fit on paper, but perhaps not yet a team pushing hard for the past-his-peak superstar.
