The Los Angeles Chargers announced Monday that former safety Rodney Harrison will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame during halftime of their Week 8 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on October 23.
Harrison, a fifth-round pick in the 1994 NFL Draft, became one of the franchise’s greatest defensive players over his nine seasons with LA. Nicknamed “The Hitman” for his fierce playing style, Harrison totaled 26 interceptions and 21.5 sacks — the most by any defensive back in team history — and helped lead them to their only Super Bowl appearance in his rookie season.

“Rodney personified an era of Chargers football defined by physicality, emotion, relentless effort, toughness and grit,” said team president John Spanos. “He gave everything he had to the Chargers, establishing a standard of accountability and setting the bar for competitive greatness.”
Harrison earned two Pro Bowl selections with LA and was named First-Team All-Pro in 1998. By the time he departed following the 2002 season, Harrison ranked fifth in solo tackles and third in interceptions in franchise history.
“What I remember most about Rodney is his incredible toughness,” former head coach Bobby Ross recalled. “He had all the tools: speed, instincts, range — but what separated him was that physical edge. He stood out from day one.”
Though his post-Chargers career saw continued success with the New England Patriots — including two Super Bowl titles and another All-Pro nod — Harrison’s legacy in San Diego was long overdue for formal recognition.
He now becomes the 36th player and first safety to enter the Chargers Hall of Fame. As one of only two to record both 20-plus sacks and interceptions, Harrison’s induction cements his place among the franchise’s all-time greats.
