Josina Anderson has reported that the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Chargers have engaged in discussions with quarterback Jameis Winston regarding a potential backup role for Justin Herbert. Anderson also suggests that the New York Giants could become interested in Winston, contingent on the outcome of their negotiations with other quarterbacks.
Both Easton Stick and Taylor Heinicke, the Chargers 2024 backups, are both free agents.
Los Angeles Chargers Considering Jamies Winston For Backup QB

Jameis Winston, 31, was the first overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played the 2019 season under his fifth-year rookie contract option, earning a base salary of $20.922 million. In 2020, he signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the New Orleans Saints. He returned to New Orleans in 2021 on another one-year deal, worth up to $12 million, as the starting quarterback, but his season was cut short by an ACL tear after eight games.
The Saints subsequently re-signed Winston to a two-year contract with a maximum value of $28 million, and later restructured the deal in 2023. Last March, the Cleveland Browns signed Winston to a one-year contract with a maximum value of $8.7 million.
In 2024, Winston appeared in 12 games for the Browns, starting seven. He completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 2,121 yards, throwing 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also contributed 83 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts.
