The Los Angeles Chargers entered free agency with the 2nd most cap space in the entire NFL. Yet, they decided to be much more frugal and not overspend on any big names.
They finally added to the wide receiver room last night when they brought back a familiar face in Mike Williams on a one-year deal.
However, they still have needs at offensive and defensive line and the tight end room. There are still options out there, but it looks like the day may end without a signing at any of these positions.
While fans won’t see it as important, they did lock down another offensive position.
Per Tom Pelissero, the Los Angeles Chargers and backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke have agreed to a one-year extension worth up to $6.2 million.

Los Angeles Chargers Secure Justin Herbert’s Backup, Taylor Heinicke

There are certainly other more important signings that the Chargers need in order to fill out their roster, but having a competent backup was still something that needed to be checked off the list.
While Justin Herbert did not miss any games, he has been banged up and close to missing time, so having someone who is familiar with the system and has rhythm with the receivers is a positive.

Heinicke started at quarterback for the Washington Commanders back in 2021. In that season, he threw for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. After his time in Washington, he spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons. He joined the Chargers late last season but quickly took over backup duties.
According to Over The Cap, the Chargers still have roughly $63 million in cap space. This might not include Heinicke’s deal yet, but regardless, the Bolts still have a lot of money to play with. Will they make any more moves before the draft?
