Los Angeles Chargers Planning To Release New Alternate Helmet Design In July, According To Latest Rumors

The Los Angeles Chargers made a splash in the NFL Draft, earning high marks for surrounding Justin Herbert with new offensive weapons while shoring up other key areas of the roster. But this summer, the Bolts may be adding a different kind of firepower—one that has nothing to do with personnel and everything to do with nostalgia.

According to Andrew Lind of SportsLogos.net, the Chargers are among several NFL teams expected to unveil alternate helmets this July. And if the rumors are true, the fan-favorite navy blue helmet may finally make its long-awaited return.

“The Chargers, on the other hand, will almost certainly reveal a navy blue helmet that matches their Color Rush uniforms,” Lind wrote, “complete with the same gold lightning bolt on the sides as their jerseys and pants. This would be a nod to their 1988–2006 helmets and would no longer force them to change the decals on their standard white lids.”

Fans have clamored for the return of the navy lid ever since the team updated its uniform set in 2020. While today’s white helmets are widely considered among the best in the league, something feels missing—specifically, the iconic navy look that defined an era of Chargers football.

The Chargers already boast some of the most visually striking uniforms in the NFL. Their lightning bolt design and vibrant color schemes are consistently ranked among the league’s best. But as good as the current setup is, the addition of the navy helmet could push it to another level.

Naturally, fans are tempering excitement with a dose of skepticism. The Chargers have teased uniform changes before, including hints of the navy helmet, but nothing has ever materialized. If the team ends up unveiling a different alternate lid—one that isn’t the navy throwback—it could backfire.

“This would be a universally beloved decision by the fanbase, something that is incredibly rare in today’s day and age,” one local analyst noted. “If the Chargers do indeed bring a new helmet into the rotation, and it isn’t the classic navy helmet, fans are not going to be happy.”

The Chargers, who won 11 games and finished second in the AFC West last season before losing to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, have not altered their uniform set since 2020. With NFL teams permitted to add alternate helmets starting in 2022, many expected L.A. to embrace the opportunity sooner.
