Chargers Rookie Tipped to Outshine AFC West Rival in Awards Race, Oddsmakers Not Convinced

The AFC West’s rookie running back race is already shaping up to be one of the NFL’s most compelling storylines. The Los Angeles Chargers invested their first-round pick in North Carolina star Omarion Hampton, while the Las Vegas Raiders went all-in on Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty with the sixth overall selection. Both were drafted to be franchise cornerstones, but early signs suggest Hampton may have the edge—even if betting markets don’t fully reflect it yet.

Hampton entered training camp positioned behind Najee Harris, but when Harris missed extended time after a July 4 fireworks mishap left him with a “superficial” eye injury, the rookie seized control of the backfield. By the time Harris returned, Hampton had already proven himself ready for a lead role.

Jeanty, meanwhile, carried the preseason buzz as a potential Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY) frontrunner thanks to his Heisman Trophy runner-up campaign. Yet some evaluators now see Hampton as the one to watch. In a prediction piece for ESPN, Jeremy Fowler revealed that several NFL executives pegged the Chargers’ rookie to take home OROY honors.

“He’s on a team that’s had playoff success and is going to run the football,” one AFC scout told Fowler. “He’s a perfect back for that offense. Ashton Jeanty is a good player, but I’m not sure the Raiders will be good enough.”

Fowler also underscored the situational advantages that Hampton enjoys.

“But Hampton has a few things going for him,” Fowler wrote. “His offensive coordinator is Greg Roman, whose love for the run game runs deep. Najee Harris sat out all of camp because of an eye issue, and though he’s back, Hampton is well-positioned as a primary back, resulting in 17 touches for 61 yards in his Week 1 debut vs. Kansas City.”

That debut was encouraging for the Chargers. Hampton logged 15 carries for 48 yards and added two receptions, leading the backfield in both carries and targets during the 23-17 win over the Chiefs. Veteran pass rusher Khalil Mack was among those to praise the rookie afterward, noting Hampton’s physical style and poise.

Jeanty was productive in his own opener, finishing with 19 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders’ win against New England. His usage suggests the Raiders also view him as a workhorse, though the offense around him may not provide the same efficiency or balance that Hampton benefits from in Los Angeles.

Of course, Hampton and Jeanty aren’t the only names in the OROY conversation. Tampa Bay’s Emeka Egbuka exploded in his debut with two touchdown grabs against Atlanta, including a game-winner. Indianapolis tight end Tyler Warren has also flashed early, while several young quarterbacks will inevitably re-enter the mix as the season unfolds. Still, given the central role both backs already hold in their respective offenses, it’s not hard to envision this year’s award battle coming down to the two AFC West rivals.

OROY odds (via DraftKings)
Ashton Jeanty (+310)
Cameron Ward (+500)
Omarion Hampton (+600)
Emeka Egbuka (+750)
Tyler Warren (+900)
Travis Hunter (+1000)
Jacory Croskey-Merritt (+1400)
TreVeyon Henderson (+1500)
Tetairoa McMillan (+1500)
Jaxson Dart (+2200)

Week 1 of the NFL season made one thing clear: the rookie class is loaded with instant-impact talent. On defense, Eagles linebacker Jihaad Campbell forced a red-zone fumble in a win over Dallas, signaling he too could be in the mix for postseason hardware. But the spotlight, for now, shines brightest on Hampton and Jeanty—a pair of rivals who may spend the next several years defining the AFC West’s future.
