Chargers Set to Get an Offensive Boost, Rookie Closing in on Return

The Los Angeles Chargers are preparing for a potential boost to their struggling backfield, as rookie running back Omarion Hampton inches closer to returning from injury. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Tuesday that Hampton has been designated to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day practice window that could see him back on the active roster as soon as this Sunday against the Raiders.

Omarion Hampton’s Recovery and Status

Hampton, the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of North Carolina, has been sidelined since Week 5 with a left ankle injury. The 22-year-old’s rookie campaign had started promisingly, with Hampton rushing 66 times for 314 yards and two touchdowns in his first five games, while also catching 20 passes for 136 yards.

“Coming out of the Chargers’ Week 12 bye, Hampton has made enough progress in his recovery from a left ankle injury to resume practicing for the first time since early October,” Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported. Harbaugh confirmed that Hampton and defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia have both been designated to return, giving the team a three-week window to evaluate their readiness before activation.

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

In Hampton’s absence, Kimani Vidal has taken over as the lead back, while Najee Harris and Hassan Haskins have also remained sidelined with injuries. Once Hampton returns, he is expected to reclaim the primary role in the Chargers’ backfield. “Whenever he’s added back to the 53-man roster, Hampton should overtake Kimani Vidal as the lead option out of the Los Angeles backfield,” Popper noted.

The rookie’s return could not come at a more critical time, as the Chargers’ offensive line continues to deal with injuries, limiting explosiveness and consistency. Hampton’s ability to contribute immediately in both the rushing and passing game could provide a much-needed lift for quarterback Justin Herbert and the overall offense.

Rookie Contract and Expectations

Hampton signed a four-year, $17.77 million rookie deal through 2028, with a fifth-year option in 2029, earning a base salary of $840,000 in 2025. While his rookie season was interrupted early, his early performances suggested he could be a key component in the Chargers’ offensive plans for years to come.

With the 21-day practice window now open, all eyes will be on Hampton’s progress in Los Angeles. If he can return this weekend against the Raiders, the Chargers could finally regain a dynamic, versatile weapon to help stabilize their offense and keep their playoff hopes alive.
