Chargers Share Key Injury Updates on 2 Offensive Weapons Ahead of Friday’s Game

The Los Angeles Chargers received encouraging news on Monday as head coach Jim Harbaugh provided key injury updates ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in São Paulo, Brazil. Two pivotal offensive players — running back Najee Harris and wide receiver Quentin Johnston — appear closer to full availability, raising optimism for the Chargers’ offensive outlook.

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

On Harris, Harbaugh confirmed the veteran running back has cleared for contact and is back practicing. “He’s looked really, really good in practice and cleared for contact,” Harbaugh said. “So just take it one day at a time.” Harris sustained an eye injury during a July 4th fireworks accident, which limited his training camp participation. Despite that, there’s now a real possibility he could take the field against the defending AFC Champion Chiefs. But Harbaugh stopped short of saying Harris would, in fact, be a full go for the game.

If Harris is active, he would likely complement 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton in a one-two punch that could power the LA ground game. Harris brings a bruising, veteran presence with over 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first four NFL seasons, while Hampton adds explosiveness and burst — a combination the team hopes can mirror the effectiveness of prior duos like J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards.

Meanwhile, Quentin Johnston has been fully cleared from concussion protocol after a preseason hit in the team’s third exhibition game. Harbaugh confirmed Johnston is in a good spot heading into Week 1. The third-year wideout will compete alongside Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen for snaps, though rookies Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith still provide additional depth.

Johnston’s return adds another dimension to the Chargers’ offense, pairing a healthy receiver corps with Justin Herbert leading the charge. With both Harris and Johnston available, the Chargers could roll into Friday night at near-full strength offensively, giving them a better chance to challenge a Chiefs team that boasts one of the league’s top defenses.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, all eyes will be on Harris’ final clearance and Johnston’s integration back into the rotation. For Los Angeles, having both players ready could be the key to establishing momentum early in the 2025 season.
