The Los Angeles Chargers are banking on a reunion with veteran wide receiver Mike Williams, hoping he can inject stability into a wide receiver room that saw Ladd McConkey explode in his rookie season, but had little else to offer Justin Herbert. However, the optimism around Williams’ return is already facing its first hurdle: health.
Mike Williams Goes Back On Chargers Injury List
Williams, who originally spent seven seasons with the Chargers before stints with the Jets and Steelers in 2024, is back in L.A. on a one-year deal. The 6-foot-4 wideout missed nearly all of the 2023 season due to a torn ACL and showed only flashes of his former explosiveness in his return last year, finishing with 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown across 18 appearances.
Now 30 years old, Williams was expected to be a reliable target for quarterback Justin Herbert, especially with the team’s limited activity in upgrading the receiver position. But just as training camp approaches, Williams has landed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with an undisclosed injury. Though it’s not believed to be serious, his absence from minicamp and continued rehab raises eyebrows.

The PUP designation means Williams can’t practice until he’s medically cleared, though he can still attend meetings and use team facilities. If he remains on the list entering Week 1, he would be ineligible to play in the first four games of the regular season.
For a player brought in to help Herbert stretch the field and win contested catches, availability is key. His injury history and recent setbacks are cause for concern, particularly for a Chargers team trying to find consistent pass-catchers.
This may open the door to a trade for newly disgruntled 49ers receiver, Jauan Jennings or dipping into the free agent pool for Amari Cooper.
Williams was once viewed as a franchise cornerstone, signing a three-year, $60 million extension in 2022. After being released, traded, and now returning on a one-year deal, the former No. 7 overall pick is facing one of the most pivotal seasons of his career — if he can stay on the field.
