The Los Angeles Chargers brought back a familiar face on Sunday, announcing a series of practice squad transactions that included signing rookie wide receiver Luke Grimm.
Grimm, who joined the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas in April, didn’t survive the initial 53-man roster cut. But the Chargers made room for him on the practice squad, giving the versatile receiver and returner a chance to continue his development. His skill set as both a pass catcher and special teams contributor could eventually help him earn a role on the active roster.
Making a Name on Special Teams

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?
If there’s one way for a fringe player to stand out during training camp and preseason, it’s through special teams. Grimm made his case in dramatic fashion earlier this month, when he returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown against the Rams.
While he caught only one pass for six yards in that game, the punt return turned heads and highlighted his ability to provide an immediate spark in the return game. That versatility could ultimately separate him from others on the roster bubble.
Grimm was productive during his college career, spending five seasons at Kansas. He finished with 177 receptions for 2,472 yards and 23 touchdowns, establishing himself as a reliable playmaker for the Jayhawks.
Building Trust with Herbert

Grimm’s impact hasn’t been limited to special teams. He flashed again at practice on Monday, this time with Justin Herbert at quarterback.
“Rookie receiver Luke Grimm had a touchdown from Herbert in red-zone seven-on-seven,” Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported. “He won on an out route and scored from 11 yards out.”
Those moments matter for players fighting uphill battles for roster spots. With established receivers like Keenan Allen, Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith ahead of him, Grimm faces stiff competition. Still, the Chargers’ staff will be watching closely to see if he can continue to stack plays and carve out a role.
Roster Moves Around Grimm

Grimm’s addition to the practice squad was part of a larger shuffle by Los Angeles. The Chargers announced four moves in total:
- WR Jalen Reagor was placed on the practice squad, injured reserve.
- WR Luke Grimm and RB Amar Johnson were signed to the practice squad.
- G Karsen Barnhart was released from the unit.
Reagor’s journey in particular highlights the volatile nature of NFL roster management. A former first-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, Reagor has bounced between several teams, including the Vikings and Patriots, before landing with the Chargers. He appeared in eight games for Los Angeles in 2024, recording seven catches for 110 yards.
What’s Next
For Grimm, the practice squad isn’t the end of the story—it’s another opportunity. His return ability, flashes in practice, and connection with Herbert could give him a path to eventual playing time.
If he continues to deliver in practice and preseason moments, the Chargers may have found more than just a temporary depth piece—they may have unearthed a hidden contributor.
