Chargers Get Joe Alt Back at Practice — But Offensive Line Crisis Far From Over

The Los Angeles Chargers received a much-needed boost on Thursday when rookie tackle Joe Alt returned to practice after missing two games with a sprained ankle. The news comes as the Bolts prepare to host the 5-1 Indianapolis Colts in a Week 7 showdown that feels reminiscent of the classic Peyton Manning–Philip Rivers battles of the 2000s. The Chargers, now 4-2, are coming off a gritty 29-27 win over Miami that showed both their promise and their flaws.

Joe Alt Returns to Practice

Alt, who injured his ankle in Week 4 against the Giants, was spotted jogging in warm-ups and participating in drills for the first time since the injury. His progress is an encouraging sign for a Chargers offensive line that’s been under siege all season.

“Justin Herbert may have his starting tackle back against the Colts,” the team’s injury report noted, offering a glimmer of stability up front. With All-Pro Rashawn Slater out for the season, Alt’s return could not come at a better time.

The Chargers have surrendered 18 sacks through six games, tied for the fifth-most in the NFL. Herbert has absorbed repeated punishment behind a patchwork line that’s rotated through combinations featuring Austin Deculus, Bobby Hart, and Mekhi Becton.

But Problems Persist

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

While Alt’s return is a positive development, the Chargers’ offensive line issues are far from solved. Trey Pipkins III and center Bradley Bozeman both missed Thursday’s practice, prolonging concerns about continuity.

Bozeman’s performance has been particularly troubling. According to Pro Football Focus, he has already allowed 16 pressures this season—an alarming pace that would rank among the worst for a center in recent memory. His struggles have amplified the protection issues, leaving Herbert frequently scrambling to keep plays alive.

If Bozeman doesn’t stabilize soon, the Chargers could be facing a historically poor year from one of their key interior linemen.

A Critical Week Ahead

With Khalil Mack back at practice and Alt trending upward, Los Angeles is showing signs of life. Still, the offensive line remains the biggest question mark for a team looking to cement itself as a legitimate AFC contender.

As the Chargers prepare for a heavyweight clash against the Colts, the message is clear: help is returning—but they’re not out of the woods yet.
