Chargers Unload A 2nd DB Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Chargers sent cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor to the New York Jets on Tuesday, a quiet but notable move that came just minutes after the NFL trade deadline passed. In return, the Chargers received a conditional 2028 seventh-round pick, with terms yet to be revealed.

Taylor, a 2022 sixth-round draft choice, carved out a meaningful role during his three seasons in Los Angeles — playing in 57 games and starting 11. Known for his speed and effort on special teams, Taylor tallied 84 tackles, 14 passes defended, an interception, and a fumble recovery in his tenure with LA.

The Chargers also traded safety Alohi Gilman to the Ravens in exchange for edge rusher Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

A New Chapter in New York

For the Jets, Taylor’s arrival comes amid a defensive overhaul. Hours earlier, New York shipped All-Pro corner Sauce Gardner to the Colts, a stunning move that followed the recent trades of Michael Carter to the Eagles and Quinnen Williams to an AFC contender. The addition of Taylor gives the Jets an experienced, versatile defensive back capable of playing both outside and in the slot — a stabilizing piece as they attempt to rebuild on the fly before facing the Browns in Week 10.

Chargers Clear Room for Youth Movement

From Los Angeles’ perspective, the deal reflects confidence in younger talent. With Nikko Reed, Eric Rogers, and a healthy Deane Leonard all ascending, GM Joe Hortiz chose to move Taylor before his contract expired.

The Chargers, sitting at 6-3 and fighting for playoff positioning, made two deals Tuesday — adding offensive lineman Trevor Penning from the Saints while parting with Taylor. The moves reflect both pragmatism and belief in the team’s developing depth as Jim Harbaugh’s first season continues to take shape.
