Chargers’ Defense Is Missing 3 Key Defenders, Must Now Contain Raiders’ Top TE in Primetime

The Los Angeles Chargers will enter Monday Night Football against the Las Vegas Raiders facing a defensive test of historic proportions. Injuries and illnesses have decimated their linebacker room, leaving the team with just two fully healthy players at the position: veteran Troy Dye and rookie Marlowe Wax.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman, the team’s most experienced inside presence, has been placed on injured reserve following an ankle injury in Week 1. Daiyan Henley, another key contributor, has been added to the injury report with an illness and is listed as questionable. Del’Shawn Phillips is also sidelined with a toe injury. To compensate, the Chargers elevated veteran safety Tony Jefferson and linebacker Kana’i Mauga from the practice squad, but neither was expected to play significant roles this early in the season.

Compounding matters, the Chargers will also be without cornerback Elijah Molden (hamstring), Kyle Kennard, and defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia. This combination leaves coordinator Jesse Minter’s unit thin across multiple levels, forcing younger, less experienced players into pivotal roles. Wax, who has yet to take an NFL snap, will be asked to contribute immediately, while Dye will have to shoulder an outsized load in coverage and run support.

Brock Bowers Will Play Vs. Chargers

Las Vegas will counter with a dynamic passing attack led by Brock Bowers, officially active for Monday’s game. NFL insider Ari Meirov confirmed, “Las Vegas TE Brock Bowers (knee) is officially active tonight vs. the #Chargers. He will play.” The second-year tight end has already shown the ability to dominate mismatches, combining size, speed, and reliable hands to exploit inexperienced linebackers. Bowers’ rookie campaign included 112 receptions for 1,194 yards and five touchdowns, and he added five catches for 103 yards in Week 1.

Adding to the Chargers’ troubles, rookie tight end Ashton Jeanty presents another coverage challenge. With a thin linebacker corps, the LA defense must adjust on the fly, often leaving Dye and Wax in isolation against elite, multi-dimensional targets. Bowers and Jeanty can both stretch the field vertically and create mismatches in the middle of the formation, putting additional strain on an already depleted unit.

Quarterback Justin Herbert and the offense will likely need to sustain long drives to keep the defense off the field, but even that may not fully mitigate the challenge. With Perryman out and Henley questionable, Vegas has an opportunity to exploit the inexperience, and the Chargers’ ability to adapt quickly could determine the outcome of this pivotal AFC West clash.

Kickoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on ESPN as part of the Week 2 Monday Night Football doubleheader. All eyes will be on how the Chargers’ patchwork defense handles Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty in a matchup built for mismatches.
