Chargers RB Room Gets Encouraging Injury Update As LA Pushes Toward Playoff Berth

The Los Angeles Chargers are inching toward full strength in the backfield—and the timing couldn’t be better. As the team enters the final stretch of the season with postseason hopes still very much alive, the running back room that once looked depleted is suddenly showing signs of life again.

This week brought the biggest development yet. As ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported, “Hassan Haskins is back at practice, meaning the Chargers have opened his window to return from IR.” It marks the first real progress for Haskins since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 7 against Indianapolis, an issue that forced him onto injured reserve and sidelined him for the last four games.

Haskins became the third back on IR this season, joining Najee Harris (Achilles) and rookie Omarion Hampton (ankle). His absence exposed how thin the Chargers had become at the position, prompting the team to elevate Amar Johnson and Jaret Patterson ahead of games against the Vikings and Raiders.

Amid the injuries, the Chargers found unexpected stability in Kimani Vidal. The rookie wasn’t expected to have a major role this season, but injuries to Harris, Hampton, and eventually Haskins thrust him into the starting job.

He has made the most of it.

Vidal delivered a breakout performance against the Raiders, rushing for 126 yards on 25 carries—including a 59-yard touchdown that shifted momentum early in the third quarter. His burst, contact balance, and decisiveness have allowed the Chargers to maintain an effective ground game despite constant turnover.

But reinforcements are finally on the way.

Omarion Hampton Nearing Return

Hampton is trending toward returning as early as Monday night against the Eagles. The rookie has been sidelined since Week 5, but Jim Harbaugh says his progress is encouraging:

“We opened his window, and we certainly wouldn’t have done that 21-day window if he wasn’t close. I feel like he’s been on track, and we’ll let the week play out again.”

His early-season production—314 rushing yards, two touchdowns, plus 136 receiving yards—was one of the bright spots of the Chargers’ offense. His blend of power and versatility gives Los Angeles a dynamic element it has sorely missed.

A Backfield Built for December Football

With Haskins practicing, Hampton nearing return, and Vidal playing the best football of his young career, the Chargers suddenly have a three-headed rotation capable of carrying them through the toughest part of the schedule. Philadelphia’s defense has shown vulnerabilities on the ground, and a fully stocked running back room allows LA to attack them with a balanced, controlled game plan.

After weeks of surviving at the position, the Chargers may finally be positioned to thrive—right when the playoff race tightens.
