For 16 years, Philip Rivers was the face of the Los Angeles Chargers franchise. This reliable, passionate, and often underrated quarterback gave everything to an organization that couldn’t quite get over the hump. Though Rivers never led the team to a Super Bowl, his commitment and consistency defined an era for the Bolts.

Now, as a fan and former star, Rivers is fully behind Justin Herbert and what the Chargers are trying to build in 2025.

“I pull, like crazy, for the Chargers, and I pull for Justin Herbert,” Rivers recently told MLFootball.

But more than support, Rivers wants the Chargers to take the right path — one he believes starts with stability under center. In his view, that means emulating franchises like the Green Bay Packers, who seamlessly transitioned from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and now to Jordan Love.

“I think it’s awesome to say that I was able to be there for 16 years,” Rivers said. “Hopefully, he [Herbert] can go another 16. I’ve always thought it was cool, you look at the [Green Bay] Packers. Doing it right. Not like [the Cleveland] Browns with 30 starters.”

The contrast couldn’t be more striking. While the Packers have enjoyed decades of quarterback continuity, the Browns have cycled through more than 30 different starters over the past 25 years, desperately searching for a long-term answer. That’s the revolving-door model Rivers believes the Chargers must avoid.

Since being drafted sixth overall in 2020, Herbert has delivered record-breaking production, but playoff success has been elusive. Rivers sees Herbert as the franchise quarterback the Chargers “nailed” in the draft — now it’s about building around him with the same foresight and consistency Green Bay has long modeled.

Herbert enters a pivotal season with a new coaching staff and a reshaped roster. The talent is there, and the support from one of the franchise’s all-time greats only underscores the high expectations.

“Hopefully Herbert can go another 16,” Rivers reiterated. “They nailed that pick. I’m pulling for him.”

It’s more than a vote of confidence — it’s a challenge from a Chargers legend to build something lasting, stable, and special.
