Chargers Make 1st Roster Cut, 2024 Draft Pick Now Hits Waivers

The Los Angeles Chargers have decided to waive wide receiver Brenden Rice, according to NFL reporter Mike Garafolo, though a practice squad spot could still be possible if he clears waivers. Rice, the son of NFL legend Jerry Rice, was selected by the Chargers in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of USC, and his selection generated immediate excitement among fans. Many had projected him as a mid-round pick, with some anticipating he could go as early as the fourth round, leading to early claims that the Bolts had landed a draft steal.

Despite the hype, Rice has struggled to make an impact at the professional level. His rookie season showed little production, and this summer’s preseason performances have done little to change that narrative. The wide receiver room has grown increasingly competitive, featuring promising rookies like Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, both of whom have impressed in training camp and are expected to see significant playing time this season. Veteran Keenan Allen also returns to bolster the group, giving quarterback Justin Herbert another reliable weapon alongside Ladd McConkey.

Rice’s preseason output reflected the uphill battle he faced, recording just three catches for 32 yards. With the Bolts’ depth at receiver, he likely ranked outside the top nine options, making it difficult to earn a final roster spot. Even a practice squad position may be uncertain given the talent ahead of him.

While Brenden Rice carries a famous surname and was once considered a draft-day bargain, the Chargers’ current roster composition and his own struggles make it challenging for him to carve out a role. For now, Los Angeles has made the decision to move forward without him on the active roster, though a practice squad opportunity could give him another chance to develop and prove himself.
