Chargers and Chiefs Eye Cole Kmet as Bears Tight End Becomes Top Trade Target
Cole Kmet’s days in Chicago may be numbered, and two AFC West contenders are reportedly circling.
After selecting Michigan’s Colston Loveland with a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Bears appear to be signaling a changing of the guard at tight end. That puts Kmet—once seen as a building block—squarely on the trade block. His $11.6 million cap hit in each of the next three seasons, coupled with a crowded receiving room that includes D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, and rookie Luther Burden, makes him expendable. According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as top suitors.
Chargers: Fit for Harbaugh’s Vision

The Chargers’ interest makes perfect sense. Head coach Jim Harbaugh is crafting a hard-nosed, physical identity in L.A., and the team is desperate for a legitimate tight end. Veteran Will Dissly is a serviceable option, but far from dynamic. Kmet would offer an immediate upgrade in both the pass game and as a blocker.
Despite offseason spending, the Chargers still have $27.2 million in cap space—plenty of room to absorb Kmet’s contract. As Knox notes, “The Chargers should consider Kmet as they look to improve Justin Herbert’s receiving corps. He’s a more dynamic pass-catcher than either Tyler Conklin or Will Dissly.”
Chiefs: Kelce’s Heir Apparent?
In Kansas City, the long-term appeal is clear. Travis Kelce, while still elite, is entering his age-36 season. The Chiefs need to plan for life after their future Hall of Famer, and Kmet offers a rare blend of youth (26), size, and experience.
Kmet wouldn’t replace Kelce immediately but could provide a dangerous complement in the short term and step into a larger role over time. His history with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy only strengthens the fit.
Bears Weigh Their Options
Chicago isn’t in a rush to move Kmet, but a strong start from Loveland could fast-track a deal. If either team meets GM Ryan Poles’ asking price, expect a bidding war to unfold before training camp opens.
