Chargers Get Broncos Injury Updates On 2 Starters

The Los Angeles Chargers will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday in a pivotal AFC West matchup at SoFi Stadium. Both teams enter with roster questions, but Denver’s latest injury report leaves Sean Payton’s squad at a clear disadvantage—something that could play directly into the Chargers’ hands.

Broncos Rule Out Two Key Players

The Broncos will be without two offseason additions who were expected to play significant roles on both sides of the ball. Tight end Evan Engram (back) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quad) were officially ruled out after missing the entire practice week.

Engram, who signed with Denver after being released by Jacksonville, has just four catches for 33 yards in two appearances. His absence limits Denver’s offensive versatility and puts more pressure on Russell Wilson’s passing game.

Greenlaw, meanwhile, has yet to play a snap this season after suffering a quad injury on July 31. The veteran linebacker was signed in March to stabilize the middle of the defense, but he will now miss his third straight game.

Head coach Sean Payton noted that Engram’s injury came during last week’s narrow 29-28 loss at Indianapolis, adding another layer of frustration for a Denver team already thin on depth.

Outside of Engram and Greenlaw, the Broncos enter relatively healthy. Tight end Nate Adkins is expected to make his season debut after recovering from ankle surgery in August. Linebacker Justin Strnad, who was limited earlier in the week, practiced fully on Friday and carries no injury designation.

Other notable defenders—Nik Bonitto (wrist), Talanoa Hufanga (chest), and Alex Singleton (thumb)—were all full participants in practice and are cleared for Sunday.

Still, the absence of Engram and Greenlaw removes two key pieces from Denver’s new-look roster.

Chargers’ Own Injury Questions

The Chargers also released their final injury report, ruling out tight end Will Dissly and defensive back Elijah Molden. Linebacker Daiyan Henley (illness) and cornerback Cam Hart (undisclosed) are listed as questionable.

Henley’s status is particularly important after his standout performance in Week 2 against the Raiders, where he was named team MVP. Molden, however, avoided injured reserve, meaning the team expects him back within the next few weeks.

To bolster depth, Los Angeles promoted linebacker Emany Johnson from the practice squad and recently signed veteran safety Tony Jefferson. The Chargers also placed Khalil Mack on injured reserve earlier this week and brought in two free agents to help with the pass rush.

Why Denver’s Injuries Matter for the Matchup

The loss of Engram and Greenlaw could tilt the matchup in the Chargers’ favor in several ways:

  1. Middle of the Field Vulnerability – With Greenlaw sidelined, Denver’s second level loses speed and experience. That could create opportunities for Justin Herbert to attack the middle with Ladd McConkey or running back checkdowns.
  2. Lack of a Reliable Safety Valve – Engram was becoming a short-yardage and red-zone option for Denver. Without him, Payton must lean on less proven options like Adkins, potentially limiting the Broncos’ offensive rhythm.
  3. Depth and Conditioning – Denver’s defense has leaned heavily on its starters in the first two weeks. Missing Greenlaw means more snaps for backups in a high-tempo Chargers environment, which could prove costly late in the game.

Final Outlook

The Broncos enter Week 3 shorthanded, while the Chargers, despite their own injury challenges, appear better equipped to adapt. If Herbert and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore can exploit Denver’s weakened linebacking corps and secondary depth, Los Angeles could seize early control in the AFC West race.

The matchup kicks off at 2:05 p.m. MT (1:05 PT) on CBS.
