Chargers Add DB To Bolster Secondary Amid Injuries Ahead of Playoff Push

The Los Angeles Chargers made a roster move Tuesday, reuniting with veteran safety Marcus Maye by signing him to their practice squad. The move comes as the team navigates multiple injuries in their safety room ahead of a critical stretch of the season.

“Maye, 32, started last season with the Dolphins but joined the Chargers late in November,” the team noted. “He appeared in four games (one start) before an ankle injury forced him onto injured reserve.”

Maye’s return provides depth behind Derwin James, the star safety who continues to make plays all over the field, and fills in the gaps left by Elijah Molden and rookie RJ Mickens, who were both sidelined recently with injuries.

The Chargers have relied on seven different safeties during the 2025 season, with varying levels of production:

  • Derwin James: 80 tackles, 6 TFLs, 2 interceptions, versatile across slot, linebacker, and edge roles
  • Elijah Molden: 46 tackles, primarily free safety, strong coverage numbers
  • Tony Jefferson: Career-high 4 interceptions, effective in Cover 3 and Cover 4
  • RJ Mickens: Solid rookie campaign, limited exposure but consistent contributor

Despite injuries, LAs secondary has been productive. James remains a key playmaker, while Jefferson and Mickens provide complementary depth. “Maye’s experience and familiarity with the organization make him a valuable addition as insurance,” a team source said.

Depth and Impact

While Derwin James leads the unit in tackles, sacks, and coverage versatility, other safeties like Jefferson and Mickens offer specialized contributions. Maye’s arrival allows the Chargers to maintain flexibility and coverage efficiency as they aim to close the season strong.

With three challenging games remaining, the Chargers’ defense—ranked second in total yards allowed (279.1 per game)—must continue to perform at a high level. James’s late-game interception against the Chiefs demonstrates the unit’s ability to make crucial plays, but injuries to Molden and Mickens underscore the importance of Maye’s return.

Outlook

The addition of Marcus Maye provides a safety net for the Chargers as they pursue a playoff berth. While some backups like Kendall Williamson and Marcus Williams have limited snaps, Maye’s veteran presence helps shore up the unit.

As the Chargers prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday, maintaining health and depth in the secondary will be pivotal. The team’s ability to absorb injuries while keeping coverage strong could determine how far they go in the postseason.
