The Los Angeles Chargers made a notable roster move Tuesday, signing offensive tackle Elijah Ellis and waiving Tyler McLellan in a corresponding transaction. Ellis, a 6-foot-6, 337-pound lineman, joins the Chargers’ 90-man roster just as the team wraps up its final organized team activities (OTAs) of the spring.
Chargers Swap OL Talent Ahead Of Training Camp

Ellis brings a fresh infusion of size and potential to a Chargers offensive line that is still seeking depth and versatility to protect quarterback Justin Herbert. After beginning his college career at Baylor, Ellis transferred to Marshall for the 2024 season, where he started all 13 games at left tackle. Prior to that, he had appeared in just nine games over three years at Baylor. His recent consistent starting role with the Thundering Herd helped showcase his capabilities and presumably caught the Chargers’ attention.
HERD FILE: Ellis comes to Marshall from Baylor where he was a two-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree while studying kinesiology. Played in five games in the 2023 season for the Bears, including four games in Big 12 action. Out of high school, Ellis did not allow a sack during his senior season and was ranked as the 181st prospect in the state of Texas.
According to Pro Football Focus, Ellis allowed 21 pressures and three sacks while earning a 49.7 run blocking grade last season. He allowed four pressures and zero sacks and a season high 65 run blocking grade against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Meanwhile, Tyler McLellan, who signed with LA last year as an undrafted free agent, spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve and was waived to make room for Ellis. The Chargers’ offensive tackle room already features stars like Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, as well as young prospects Corey Stewart and Savion Washington. Veteran Trey Pipkins has also taken reps at tackle during OTAs, though his primary position remains guard.
