Emeka Egbuka Injury Update: Insider Reveals Severity, Timeline

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has been one of the brightest young stars of the 2025 NFL season — but his breakout campaign may be on pause after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday’s 30-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

A Breakout Season Interrupted

Egbuka left the game in the second half and did not return after pulling up awkwardly on a route. Before the injury, he had two catches on four targets for 24 yards, following back-to-back 100-yard performances in his previous two games. Through six weeks, the former Ohio State standout had totaled 27 receptions for 469 yards and five touchdowns, averaging over 78 yards per game — a pace that placed him among the most productive rookie receivers in Buccaneers history.

On Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared an update that provided both relief and caution for Buccaneers fans.

“You can add Emeka Egbuka to that list as well,” Rapoport said. “He’s dealing with a hamstring injury, he’s going to get an MRI today. It does not seem like it is that serious. I do expect him to miss some time, but it doesn’t seem to be maybe as serious as the Mike Evans one.”

That distinction matters. Veteran receiver Mike Evans has been sidelined since Week 3 with a hamstring issue that was severe enough to nearly land him on injured reserve. While Egbuka’s timeline is expected to be shorter, Rapoport’s comments suggest at least a brief absence is likely.

Bucs’ Depth Tested

The timing couldn’t be worse for Tampa Bay. Evans is still recovering, and Chris Godwin Jr. remains week-to-week with a fibula injury suffered in Week 5. If all three top receivers are sidelined against the Detroit Lions in Week 7, the Bucs’ receiving corps could be reduced to Sterling Shepard, Tez Johnson, and Kameron Johnson, with tight end Cade Otton potentially seeing a major uptick in targets.

Looking Ahead

Despite the injuries, the Buccaneers continue to ride a strong start behind quarterback Baker Mayfield’s MVP-level play. But if Egbuka, Evans, and Godwin all remain out, Tampa Bay’s offense will be tested in a way it hasn’t yet faced this season.

For now, the team’s focus will be on getting its rookie star back to full speed — without risking a longer setback.
