USC Trojans Finalize Defensive Staff With Key Hires: Ekeler, Gonzales, And Jones Locked In

In a major step toward solidifying their defensive identity for the 2026 season and beyond, the USC Trojans have officially announced three significant additions and promotions to their coaching staff. These moves, first reported weeks ago and now formally confirmed by head coach Lincoln Riley, address critical areas in special teams, linebackers, safeties, and the defensive line—areas that were focal points for improvement after a transitional Big Ten debut.

USC Trojans Officially Announce Assistant Coaches

The standout hire is Mike Ekeler, who returns to USC as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. Riley praised the veteran coach:

“This is an exciting return to USC for Mike and his family. Mike’s special teams and linebacker units are elite, and he brings 23 years of powerful experience on staffs that have produced some of the nation’s finest defenses and special teams. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to Los Angeles as part of our program.”

Ekeler brings an impressive resume: 28 years in coaching, including 23 at the FBS level and 22 at Power 4 programs. His stops include USC (earlier in his career), Oklahoma, Nebraska, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU.

This marks his 10th season as a special teams coordinator, making him one of the most experienced voices in that role nationally.

Analysts and fans have quickly labeled this the “home run hire” of USC’s offseason, especially as it allows the program to shift longtime defensive mind Rob Ryan into an analyst role while injecting proven expertise into special teams—a unit that struggled with consistency in recent years—and the linebacker corps.

Joining the staff is Paul Gonzales as Safeties Coach and Defensive Pass Game Coordinator. Gonzales steps in to handle secondary duties previously overseen by Doug Belk, who departed after a strong tenure with the safeties group. Riley highlighted Gonzales’ fit:

“We’re happy to welcome Paul to the Trojan family. His experience working alongside Coach Patterson, combined with his strong football acumen and energy, will have an immediate impact on our defense. He will quickly elevate the development and performance of our safeties.”

Gonzales spent the 2025 season at Baylor as defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, where he helped Lavar Thornton Jr. earn All-Big 12 honorable mention honors. Before that, he logged 13 years at TCU, primarily under Gary Patterson—USC’s new defensive coordinator. His deep familiarity with Patterson’s schemes is a seamless bridge, ensuring continuity for a talented safety room.

Rounding out the announcements is the promotion of Skyler Jones to Defensive Tackles Coach. Jones, who served as a defensive analyst in 2025 and was a key lieutenant to departing DL coach Henny, earns the nod after demonstrating strong player development and relationship-building. Riley noted:

“We are thrilled for Skyler. He has earned this opportunity by consistently developing high performers, building meaningful relationships with our players, and demonstrating his commitment to the standard of excellence we expect in our program. He will continue to enhance our defensive line and elevate the talent in our room.”

Jones’ quick impact is already evident: Shortly after receiving an offer, three-star defensive tackle Isaia Vandermade (6’4″, 270 lbs from Santa Margarita Catholic HS) committed to the USC Trojans. Despite his current three-star rating, insiders view Vandermade as underrated, with potential to rise significantly during his senior season. Jones’ promotion maintains continuity on the line while rewarding internal growth.

These hires cap a defensive staff overhaul that began with Gary Patterson’s arrival as defensive coordinator (announced earlier with a full press conference). The group now appears complete, with no further major changes anticipated. One minor departure was noted: offensive analyst Bradley Aoki (a former USC quarterback who worked closely with Riley) left for Alabama as a pass game specialist.

With the defensive coaching puzzle solved, the USC Trojans can shift full focus to spring practices, recruiting momentum, and preparing for another competitive Big Ten slate. Riley’s emphasis on experience, scheme familiarity, and player development signals confidence in turning the defense into a strength. For Trojans fans, these official announcements provide closure on the staff rebuild and excitement for what’s ahead in 2026.
