USC Trojans Practice No. 15 Notes
Intensity rising • 11 days until kickoff

Practice 15 of fall camp is in the books. USC Trojans season opener is Saturday, August 29 vs. San Jose State at the Coliseum. This week is basically mock-game week. Next week becomes true game-week prep.

Biggest News: WR Tanook Hines Is Back

Wide Receiver Tanook Hines returned to the field today in full pads.

We only watched him do individual work (media couldn’t see team periods), but he looked like a full participant.

He missed all of spring and most of fall camp, but there was never real concern he’d miss the start of the season. Still, every extra rep he gets now is valuable.

The receiver room was already deep. Adding him back makes it even more competitive.

Current depth-chart lean (pre-return):

  • Outside: Kayden Dixon-Wyatt & Terrell Anderson
  • Slot: Trent Mosley

Tanook knows the system. Once the chemistry with Jayden Maiava clicks again and his body is fully up to speed, he can climb right back into the starting conversation. It’s a good problem for USC to have.

Practice Feel

The intensity was noticeably higher today.

Coaches were louder. Players were sprinting between drills. No jogging, no standing around. You can feel the games are getting close.

Practices have also shifted from early morning to afternoon — the same schedule they’ll be on during the season. Another box checked.

Only a handful of practices left before real bullets start flying.

Lincoln Riley’s Defensive Standouts

Coach Riley highlighted several guys on the Defense who have stood out through camp:

Secondary

  • Jontez Williams — Clear CB1. One of the best portal additions in the country. Hasn’t missed a beat after missing spring.
  • Prophet Brown — Free safety. Missed all of last season. Looks healthy and is reclaiming a starting role.
  • Rock Hill — Freshman. Emerging as the clear CB3. Will play early.
  • Matt Riordan — Freshman. Body has filled out. Plays wise beyond his years. Soaking everything up from the veterans. Potential future free safety.

Linebackers

  • Deven Bryant — Transfer. Bringing leadership and veteran presence to a deep room.
  • Talanoa Ili — Freshman. Learning the system fast. Looks like a future starter (and potential #55 at the position).

Defensive Line

Riley didn’t single out one name. He just said the entire front has been strong and has real depth. That depth should let them rotate and stay fresh all season.

QB2 Battle Still Open

Jonas Williams and Sam Huard are still splitting second-team reps roughly 50/50.

Riley wants it decided by the end of this week so roles are clear heading into game week.

  • Sam Huard: veteran presence, strong command of the offense.
  • Jonas Williams: high-end talent and athleticism, improving every day in the system.

Quick Notes

The biggest takeaway is simple: the team is tightening up.

Tanook is back. The defense has clear standouts and depth. The intensity is climbing. The schedule is shifting to game mode.

You can smell football in the air.

Fight On.
