Expert Predicts UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava’s Career About To Take a Shocking Turn

The UCLA Bruins are stumbling out of the gate, sitting at 0-3 as Big Ten play looms, and the team’s quarterback situation is emblematic of deeper problems. Nico Iamaleava, who transferred from Tennessee, has struggled to find his rhythm, while the Bruins’ roster remains incomplete and program trajectory increasingly uncertain. With head coach DeShaun Foster recently fired, the ripple effects may spur a mass exodus.

“The timing of the firing is a surprise, as the Bruins have only played three games,” Nicholas Rome of Saturday Blitz wrote. “Given that they’ve only played three games, we could see a mass exodus making a terrible product even worse.”

Rumors are swirling that Iamaleava is eyeing the transfer portal, potentially to correct earlier missteps. Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today noted: “Transferring again would allow Iamaleava to correct what he got wrong last time. For starters, get a deal done in the winter, and not the spring. If Iamaleava had taken care of his business last December, rather than dragging out his situation at Tennessee into April, he would’ve had better options than UCLA.”

One intriguing potential destination could be Vanderbilt, where Diego Pavia has emerged as a fan favorite. SI’s Matt De Lima explained: “If the goal is to show NFL evaluators that he can endure adversity and lead an SEC team, Vanderbilt is an underrated landing spot. The path would be difficult, but for Iamaleava, so far every step of the journey has been.”

Tennessee, meanwhile, has thrived with Joey Aguilar under center. Urban Meyer lauded the Volunteers’ quarterback: “I don’t know this guy, but he must be a monster. I was dead wrong. Dead wrong. That kid played his ass off.” Aguilar’s performance through three games—906 yards, nine touchdowns, and a 66.3% completion percentage—stands in stark contrast to Iamaleava’s 0-3 start at UCLA.

Joel Klatt echoed the sentiment on his podcast: “Tennessee has got to be so thrilled, because guess what? You won the trade. Aguilar is a total upgrade quarterback for Tennessee, and their wide receivers on the outside were incredible.”

Despite Iamaleava practicing on Wednesday, the Bruins’ internal turmoil continues. Athletic director Martin Jarmond said no players indicated they were transferring, while interim coach Tim Skipper emphasized, “There’s nothing to announce or report that way. We’re just going to take it one day at a time and keep on working.”

With Foster gone, defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe also out, and the transfer portal looming, UCLA is at a crossroads. Iamaleava’s best chance to reboot his career may be to evaluate options beyond Westwood—seeking a program and coaching staff capable of maximizing his talent while positioning him for the NFL.

For now, UCLA’s quarterback experiment has faltered, and the Bruins’ rebuild will be closely watched in the weeks ahead.
