After a month that looked like rock bottom, the UCLA Bruins have started to swing back. The Bruins have flipped the script in the last two weeks, knocking off No. 7 Penn State and running through Michigan State with ease. Now at 2–4 and 2–1 in the Big Ten, they are finally playing with purpose under interim coach Tim Skipper.
This matchup against Maryland is all about continuing the identity shift. UCLA’s offense is now grounded in physicality and rhythm. The run game has come alive with 238 yards and two scores against Michigan State, and the offensive line has started winning in the trenches.
Whether or not Anthony Woods suits up, UCLA must stay committed to the run. Maryland gives up just over 112 yards on the ground per game, but it can be worn down.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava has settled in. He has gone three straight games without an interception and is starting to make plays with his legs when things break down.
Maryland’s secondary is dangerous, leading the country with 12 interceptions, three returned for touchdowns. But they also give up 228 passing yards a game. If Iamaleava stays patient and avoids the mistakes Maryland thrives on, UCLA can move the ball.
UCLA Bruins Defense Must Pressure Maryland QB

On the other side, the Bruins’ defense has stepped up. They gave up two touchdowns in the last six quarters and shut down Michigan State’s run game. That effort has to carry over.
Maryland’s freshman quarterback Malik Washington has thrown for over 1,500 yards and just two picks, but he has not faced a defense bringing pressure like UCLA’s. Getting to him early and often is a must.

Maryland’s run game is thin due to injuries and has averaged under 100 yards per game. If UCLA’s front seven plays sound and takes care of DeJuan Williams, the Terps will become one-dimensional.
The Bruins have found a formula that works. Run the ball, avoid turnovers, pressure the quarterback, and take away explosive plays. If they stick to that script, they can keep their win streak going and stay on track for a strong second half of the season.
