UCLA Bruins Can Notch Their First Win Against Northwestern With These Keys

The UCLA Bruins enter the weekend against Northwestern needing a clean, disciplined performance to right the ship under interim head coach Tim Skipper.

The Bruins have shown occasional flashes with quarterback Nico Iamaleava, but this matchup will come down to execution in three areas: protection, run balance, and defensive discipline.

UCLA Bruins Must Protect Nico Iamaleava

Northwestern’s strength lies in its front seven. Linebacker Mac Uihlein has been everywhere, and defensive tackle Najee Story anchors the line.

Iamaleava, averaging just over 200 passing yards per game with three touchdowns, needs time to exploit the Wildcats’ inexperienced corners. UCLA’s offensive line must handle pressure, while receivers like Kwazi Gilmer and Titus Mokiao-Atimalala can take advantage of one-on-one matchups downfield.

Pass protection has been a struggle at times this season for the Bruins, so winning up front should be a priority in every game moving forward.

Establish The Run

The Bruins cannot be one-dimensional. Nico is currently the leading team rusher, edging out Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas.

Woods has shown potential, but the line must create space against a unit that has been tough against the run. Stretch plays and screens can slow down Northwestern’s linebackers, setting up play-action shots.

If UCLA controls the tempo early, it keeps Northwestern’s shaky offense under added pressure.

Force Turnovers

Northwestern’s offense has been turnover-prone, with quarterback Preston Stone already throwing multiple interceptions this year. Without injured starter Cam Porter, the Wildcats’ run game has been patchwork.

UCLA has yet to record an INT, but they did recover a fumble.

UCLA linebackers Isaiah Chisom and JonJon Vaughns, both among the nation’s tackle leaders, will be key in shutting down inside runs and forcing Stone into obvious passing downs. That’s when disguised blitzes and tight coverage can turn into takeaways.

Special Teams And Field Position

Mateen Bhaghani has already shown range with a 51-yard field goal. Keeping drives alive and finishing with points matters in what could be a field-position battle.

Northwestern return man Joseph Himon II is dangerous, so the Bruins’ coverage units must stay disciplined to prevent a game-swinging play.

This is not the kind of opponent UCLA can overlook, especially the way that they’ve been playing this season. Northwestern’s defense will scrap, but its offense lacks the firepower to keep pace if the Bruins avoid self-inflicted mistakes.

Protect the quarterback, establish balance, and force Stone into errors; those are the keys that should tilt the game the UCLA Bruins’ way.
