From the moment he arrived on the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, LeBron James has faced questions about his future with the team. After all, he had already changed teams twice, so what’s one more for one of the NBA’s best players of all time?
As James continues to age gracefully, the topic of retirement, or playing elsewhere, hasn’t dissipated. In fact, now that the Lakers have officially been eliminated from the playoffs again, the topic has surfaced again.
Now it’s gotten to the point where The Athletic is reporting on sources close to James who indicate he may be more open to leaving the Lakers this offseason than in years past.
“Might James think about finishing his career elsewhere in pursuit of a fifth ring? When posed that question, both league sources close to James and team sources would not rule that possibility out. And that was before the revealing elimination game.”
The Athletic on LeBron James
Ultimately, it seems extremely hard to imagine a scenario where James prefers playing elsewhere. After all, the Lakers have gone out of their way to support him in every way imaginable, including by drafting his son Bronny James.
Not to mention, why would LeBron want to leave now that the Lakers finally paired him with a true superstar, someone who’s viewed as one of the best players in the NBA? If anything, now is the time to bunker down and hit the recruiting trails even harder, knowing the Lakers could be just one or two pieces away from securing yet another NBA Championship.
