In a move that no one saw coming, the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers shocked the world ahead of last season’s NBA trade deadline by agreeing to a Luka Doncic trade. As expected, the Doncic trade had plenty of folks talking about why the Mavericks would ever trade the face of their franchise.
Multiple reports suggested the Mavs had issues with Doncic’s conditioning, work ethic, and even his weight. Luka Doncic heard those complaints.
Now, according to The Athletic’s Lakers insider Dan Woike, Doncic has already lost a “significant amount of weight” this offseason. But that’s not the only change he’s made since the Lakers’ season ended.
“Dončić has been incredibly committed to his conditioning this offseason. He’s dropped significant weight and is working on strict diet and cardio training, according to a source with knowledge of the plan. In a shift from his normal offseason, he spent a month away from on-court work to focus more on his body. Dončić has looked visibly slimmer in photos and is now back working out with Slovenia readying for EuroBasket competition later this summer.”

Perhaps the reports on his trade from the Mavericks had a lasting impact on Doncic’s offseason approach. Or maybe it was the fact that he got so close to the NBA Finals last season, but came up much shorter this time around by being eliminated in the first round of play.
Either way, it’s clear Luka Doncic is taking his NBA career more seriously after the Mavericks shipped him to Los Angeles. Whether it has an immediate impact remains to be seen, but considering how great the five-time All-NBA talent was before the change, the rest of the league should be concerned.
