LeBron James Injury Update: Lakers Receive New Timeline

The Los Angeles Lakers are 2–1 to start the 2025–26 season, but the team faces early setbacks. Luka Dončić, who began the season on a hot streak, is expected to miss time due to an injury, leaving the Lakers without their star guard. In his absence, Austin Reaves stepped up in spectacular fashion, scoring 51 points, grabbing 22 rebounds, and dishing out 9 assists in last night’s win, giving the Lakers a temporary boost while Doncic recovers.

James has been sidelined due to a back injury, initially expected to keep him out 3–4 weeks, with a re-evaluation scheduled for October 30th. ESPN’s Shams Charania described the injury as one that “comes and goes,” emphasizing that recovery is dictated by time and personal response rather than a set treatment timeline.

Now, NBA Today’s Dave McMeniman has offered additional clarity on James’ recovery. “I’m told that we’re still in the range of about 3 more weeks before he would be targeting a return sometime in mid-November. I have been told by multiple sources over the last several days that his rehab and all of the process to get back to that return date is moving in the right direction,” McMeniman said.

Implications for the Lakers

With LeBron expected back in mid-November, the Lakers will continue leaning on Luka Dončić and their supporting cast to maintain competitiveness. The team’s strong start, even in defeat, suggests that while James’ presence is missed, they have the resilience and depth to navigate the early season. Mid-November could mark the turning point where the Lakers regain their full-strength roster and recalibrate for a sustained playoff push.
