The NBA trade market has reached an unusual pause, and at the center of it all is a familiar name. While Giannis Antetokounmpo has publicly stated he is not planning to request a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks, league executives aren’t taking that stance at face value. Instead, front offices — including the Lakers — are quietly positioning themselves, creating the latest wave of Lakers trade rumors speculation as the February deadline approaches.
Milwaukee’s on-court reality is driving the uncertainty. The Bucks remain outside the Eastern Conference play-in picture, hovering around the 10th and 11th seeds. Even with a late surge, their ceiling appears limited, and that reality has forced teams across the league to ask the same question: how long will Giannis tolerate it?
Teams Holding Their Assets — Including the Lakers

NBA insider Zach Lowe recently reported that five teams are actively considering holding onto their assets in anticipation of Antetokounmpo eventually becoming available.
“The Hawks, Warriors, Lakers, Heat and Knicks are all considering holding onto their assets for a potential pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo now or in the summer,” Lowe said.
For the Lakers, this only fuels an already familiar dynamic. They’re almost always linked to superstar movement, but this situation is more delicate than most. Making a smaller trade now could remove them from the conversation later if Giannis truly hits the market. As a result, patience — not aggression — has become the strategy.

Why the League Isn’t Fully Buying the Status Quo
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst echoed that hesitation, explaining that deals across the league are effectively frozen.
“The biggest question in the NBA right now is are the Bucks really going to stand for this and is Giannis really going to stand for this,” Windhorst said. “There are deals that are on hold … because teams still aren’t 100% sure whether Giannis is going to be on the team the rest of the year.”
Those doubts have only grown as Milwaukee continues to struggle. Since Antetokounmpo returned from injury, the Bucks have hovered around .500 and have been “getting shellacked” whenever he’s off the floor, according to Lowe. The sense around the league is that the next few weeks matter more than the Bucks might publicly admit.

Lakers Trade Rumor Complications

From a Lakers perspective, the path is difficult even if Giannis becomes available. Matching salary, preserving future flexibility, and navigating sign-and-trade mechanics — potentially involving Austin Reaves — make any deal complex. Still, complexity hasn’t stopped the Lakers from looming over blockbuster scenarios before.
What’s clear is that Los Angeles, like several other franchises, doesn’t want to blink first. Trading assets now for marginal improvement could be costly if Antetokounmpo pushes the button later.

A League-Wide Standoff
Milwaukee insists it will approach the deadline as a buyer, despite limited assets and reluctance to move its lone tradable first-round pick. But even a playoff appearance may not satisfy a superstar who has made it clear he wants another championship.
As Lowe put it, “The whole league is watching.” For now, the Lakers trade rumor mill continues to churn — not because a deal is imminent, but because no one wants to be the team that moved too soon while Giannis Antetokounmpo was still deciding how much more he’s willing to wait.
