‘No Threat At All’: Lakers Set Timeline For LeBron James Exit Ahead Of 2025 Season, Insider Says

As LeBron James heads into his 22nd NBA season—his eighth in purple and gold—uncertainty looms over what could be his final year with the Los Angeles Lakers. While James remains the league’s most iconic active player and continues to defy age, the franchise appears to be quietly preparing for life after him.

The Lakers, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, aren’t planning on a blockbuster exit or emotional farewell tour. Instead, their preferred path is to let James’ contract expire after the 2025–26 season and turn the page toward a new era centered around Luka Dončić.

“The Lakers’ widely presumed preferred scenario for their future is letting James’ contract drop off their books after the 2025–26 season,” Stein reported in his Stein Line newsletter.

James made headlines this offseason when he opted into his $52.6 million player option for the upcoming campaign. Shortly after, agent Rich Paul issued a statement that, to some, hinted at the beginning of the end. While the Lakers haven’t officially confirmed their long-term plans, the omission of any contract extension—and the lack of effort to negotiate one—spoke volumes.

“James understands the dynamics of this league as well as any player ever has,” Stein wrote. “And I think he knows, deep down, that the threat of him leaving Lakerland next summer is no threat at all now.”

Paul’s message was subtle but telling, suggesting both sides are aligned on a quiet split after the season. The trade rumors may swirl, but Stein, along with ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, confirmed that neither side has seriously entertained that route.

The Longevity GOAT Prepares for a Final Run

Barring any major developments, James is expected to be present when the Los Angeles Lakers open training camp in late September. That would mark his eighth straight camp with the franchise—the longest tenure he’s had with any team in his legendary career.

“LeBron is going to be at his eighth Lakers training camp in a row… the longest continuous stretch with one team in his Longevity GOAT career,” Stein noted.

This run has seen everything: a 2020 championship in the Orlando bubble, dramatic playoff exits, coaching changes, front office resets, and a revolving door of supporting casts. Now, it appears set to end not with a bang, but with a soft pivot toward the future.

The Future Belongs to Luka

That future, clearly, revolves around Luka Dončić. The Lakers’ investment in the 26-year-old Slovenian superstar signals their intent to build a new identity. In the meantime, they’ve bolstered the roster with veterans like Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton in an effort to remain competitive.

James, for his part, seems content—for now. There’s no trade demand, no retirement announcement, and no inclination to leave mid-season. But there’s also no denying the shift.

“Unless something changes, the season ahead will be James’ last in Los Angeles, one way or the other,” Stein wrote.

Even ESPN reported that the Lakers declined to offer an extension this offseason. If the speculation proves true, the Lakers may already be plotting to pair Dončić with another co-star in the near future.

One Last Chase for Greatness

If this is indeed the final chapter of LeBron’s Lakers story, he appears determined to go out swinging. Beyond another title run, 2025–26 offers him a chance to cement his place in history.

“Fifty more regular-season games will put James at 1,612 for his career and nudge him past Robert Parish for the NBA’s all-time record,” Stein reported.

He’s also currently tied with Vince Carter for most seasons played (22) and can break that record outright with a full campaign.

Adding intrigue to the year: Bronny James, fresh off a promising Summer League stint, could carve out a rotation role alongside his father—making NBA history as the first father-son duo to share the court.

What Comes Next?

James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers remains unclear beyond this season. Retirement, relocation, or even a reunion with a former team like the Cavaliers or Heat are all on the table. But what’s clear is this: the franchise no longer hinges on his presence.

And perhaps, for the first time since he entered the league in 2003, LeBron James is entering a season knowing exactly how—and when—it might end.
