Latest Lakers Rumor Means The End Of LeBron James Era With LA

The Los Angeles Lakers appear to be punting on 2025, and that may be too much for LeBron James to stomach.

After opting into his $52.4 million player option for next season, James made it clear—via agent Rich Paul—that his priority remains winning now. “He wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.”

That understanding may be wearing thin. The Lakers allowed key role player Dorian Finney-Smith to walk in free agency, choosing cap discipline over continuity. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the franchise wants to preserve flexibility for 2027, when it hopes to land a max-salary free agent. But as Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor noted: “2027? You mean… two summers from now… for a player they may or may not be able to get? Is Rob Pelinka insane? You have Luka Doncic and LeBron James on your team today!”

That’s the heart of the issue. James is 40. He still made All-NBA Second Team last season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. He’s still an elite player, but time isn’t on his side. And LA’s measured offseason—headlined by Jake LaRavia and missed opportunities for centers like Clint Capela and Brook Lopez—signals a team looking past him.

Rumors of James requesting a trade if things don’t change are beginning to surface. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently said LA’s lack of urgency could “open the door” to a dramatic shift.

Don’t be surprised if LeBron forces that door open. Whether it’s a return to Cleveland, a long-rumored move to the Knicks, or even a pivot to Golden State, contenders would find ways to make room for him.

The Lakers are betting on the future. James may no longer be interested in waiting for it.
