Lakers Already Have New Magic Johnson On The Roster, According To Former NBA Star

The Los Angeles Lakers are banking on a revitalized Luka Doncic to catapult them back into championship contention. Fresh off signing an extension with the franchise, the 26-year-old star enters the 2025–26 season in noticeably better shape, revealing a slimmed-down frame in a Men’s Health feature earlier this summer. For a team that hasn’t advanced past the second round since winning the 2020 NBA title, Doncic’s transformation could be the key to unlocking their ceiling.

Conditioning has long been the one knock on Doncic’s game. His brilliance was rarely in question—few players in league history have matched his blend of scoring, creativity, and clutch shot-making—but his tendency to wear down late in playoff runs often left fans and teammates wondering what might have been. A leaner Doncic may eliminate that concern entirely, and that’s one reason the Lakers believe they have a centerpiece who can change the trajectory of their franchise.

For all his scoring fireworks, Doncic’s passing remains his defining gift. The way he manipulates defenses, sees angles others miss, and creates for teammates has long earned him comparisons to Lakers icon Magic Johnson. That parallel has only grown louder since his blockbuster trade from Dallas to Los Angeles in February, a move that stunned both fans and league insiders.

“I would always call him Luka Magic because he reminded me of a European version of Magic Johnson,” former Mavericks center and 2011 champion Tyson Chandler said at this summer’s Basketball Without Borders Europe camp, per Eurohoops.net. “This new age, Luka is his own player, but Magic was the older generation of somebody with a smile that was the killer. They’d come out there and destroy you, win games, but with a big smile. He’s just such a joy to watch, and I love watching him. Nothing but great things to say about Luka.”

Chandler, who now works in player development for Dallas, spent four years around Doncic and was part of the Mavericks’ 2024 Finals run. Even in practice, Chandler said, Doncic consistently astonished veteran teammates. “Of course, we all see what Luka does in the game, but I’m speaking about practice, because it’s very difficult to impress your peers. Luka does things that I’ve never seen before. That’s difficult.”

Mark Cuban, Dallas’s longtime owner, made a similar point last season when he called Doncic and Magic “baby-faced assassins” capable of dropping 40 while disarming opponents with charisma.

A Lakers Trade That Shook the League

The trade that delivered Doncic to Los Angeles was one of the most surprising moves of the last decade. Chandler himself admitted he was caught off guard. “I was just as surprised as the rest of the world with the trade. I think it will end up working out for both sides, you know, in the long run. But I was just surprised, clearly.”

While Mavericks fans are still processing the departure of their European superstar, Doncic has been embraced quickly in Los Angeles, where his skill set and flair evoke nostalgia for the Showtime era. The Lakers believe he can pair with Anthony Davis and a reshaped supporting cast to keep pace with the Western Conference elite.

Skeptics point to the Lakers’ lack of depth, particularly in the frontcourt, as a roadblock to true contention. Teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets still boast deeper, younger rotations. But if Doncic’s offseason work pays dividends, the Lakers may no longer have to worry about him running out of steam in the final minutes of tight playoff battles.

The season begins October 21, when Los Angeles hosts the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena. From the moment he steps onto the floor, Doncic will face the dual challenge of leading a new-look Lakers roster and living up to comparisons with the legend whose shadow still looms largest in purple and gold.

If he succeeds, “Luka Magic” could become more than just a nickname. It might be the beginning of the Lakers’ next great chapter.
