Lakers, Luka Doncic Agree To 4-Year Extension, According To Sportklub

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly secured the long-term future of their new franchise cornerstone. According to Slovenian outlet Sportklub, Luka Dončić has verbally agreed to a four-year, $229 million contract extension with the Lakers, a deal that is expected to become official when the All-NBA guard becomes extension-eligible on August 2.

“Dončić is said to have agreed to a four-year extension worth 229 million US dollars,” reported Sportklub journalist Martin Pavcnik, who added that earlier speculation about Dončić waiting for free agency in 2026 has now been firmly quieted. “It seems that the uncertainty will soon be over.”

The news comes less than a year after the Lakers shocked the NBA by acquiring the five-time All-Star from the Dallas Mavericks midseason, instantly reshaping the team’s competitive window.

At just 26 years old, Dončić is widely considered one of the game’s elite offensive engines, and his presence in Los Angeles signals a dramatic shift in the franchise’s identity. After a season in which he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 1.6 steals across 28 regular-season games with the Lakers, Dončić delivered a strong postseason showing as well—putting up 30.2 points per game in a first-round playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While that early playoff exit was a disappointment, Dončić’s commitment to the franchise has not wavered. In fact, the Slovenian star has taken an active role in building the roster this offseason.

Luka’s Recruiting Power

Sources around the league indicate that Dončić was instrumental in recruiting both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to Los Angeles. Ayton, who signed a two-year deal after a buyout from Portland, will slot in as the Lakers’ new starting center. Smart, acquired after his own buyout from the Washington Wizards, cited Dončić directly when asked why he chose Los Angeles.

“There’s a lot of reasons [why I chose the Lakers], but the main one is being able to play with Luka and LeBron,” Smart said during his introductory press conference. “When you get a guy like Luka calling… trying to see if you want to come and join something special that he’s trying to cook up over here—that meant a lot.”

Dončić will fly to Slovenia on August 4 to join his national team for the EuroBasket tournament, but only after finalizing his deal with the Lakers. Per national team director Matej Likar, Dončić’s commitment to the Slovenian team has never been in question, but his professional obligations will be handled first.

“When he arrives, I will probably have to stand in line to arrange the last detail,” Likar said. “Yes, everything is ready… I can only confirm that everything is going according to plan.”

NBA regulations allow players to spend a maximum of 28 days with their national teams, meaning Dončić’s time with Slovenia will be relatively short. The Lakers will reportedly send one of their assistant coaches overseas to monitor his recovery and conditioning.

Long-Term Commitment, Short-Term Stakes

This new extension all but cements Dončić as the face of the Lakers moving forward, especially as LeBron James enters his 40s. While ESPN’s Bobby Marks had previously predicted that Dončić might pursue a three-year deal to reenter free agency sooner, this reported four-year commitment signals mutual trust between the star and the franchise.

“More likely: a three-year, $165 million extension that includes a player option,” Marks wrote earlier this summer. That projection appears to have been superseded by a deeper, longer-term agreement.

Should the deal become official next week, the Lakers will have taken a significant step toward reestablishing themselves as perennial contenders in the Western Conference. The front office must now ensure that the supporting cast matches the ambitions of their new leader.

In Luka Dončić, the Lakers haven’t just acquired a superstar. They’ve locked in the future of the franchise.
