Lakers Could Lose LeBron James As Title Contenders Now Preparing To ‘Go Hard’

The Los Angeles Lakers’ future may soon be at a crossroads as LeBron James, the franchise’s longtime cornerstone, approaches free agency and the twilight of his illustrious career. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers, long overshadowed by the star, have positioned themselves as a formidable force in the Eastern Conference, raising questions about whether James might return home to Cleveland to chase another championship.

The 2024-25 season for the Cavs was a tale of highs and lows. After securing the Eastern Conference’s top seed — their first since 2016 — Cleveland swept the Miami Heat in the first round but stumbled against the Indiana Pacers, who shocked the league with a surprising Finals run. With key Eastern contenders like the Lakers’ rivals Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks crippled by injuries, Cleveland’s window to seize the conference crown has never been wider.

“Next season is a big year for Cleveland,” an NBA executive told Cavaliers Nation. “Tyrese [Haliburton] is out. Jayson [Tatum] is most likely out. The East is wide open. It’s there for the Cavaliers to take. They should win the conference next season. There’s no excuses. And once you get to the Finals, anything can happen. I actually think they match up really well against OKC.”

Lakers May Have Trouble Keeping LeBron James

Led by Donovan Mitchell and anchored by Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley, with All-Stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen rounding out the roster, the Cavaliers boast a talented core poised to challenge for a title. But if the Cavs fall short, there’s growing speculation that Cleveland could try to lure LeBron James away from the Lakers in free agency.

“I’ll tell you this right now: If the Cavaliers don’t win it all next season, I can see them going hard after LeBron,” the executive said. “Everyone knows Dan [Gilbert] wants to win a title without him, but if they can’t win the championship next season, adding LeBron to that group would be a cheat code. I know he’ll be 42, but it’s LeBron. He will always be an elite force.”

The relationship between Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and LeBron has long been complicated, rooted in the 2010 departure when James left Cleveland for the Miami Heat. Gilbert’s scathing open letter at the time signaled a fierce competitive streak and desire to prove the franchise could succeed without its superstar — a tension that has shadowed their interactions ever since. While they reconciled in time for Cleveland’s 2016 title run, that chapter left a lasting mark.

From the LA perspective, retaining James is crucial, but it’s not without challenges. At 40, LeBron is the NBA’s oldest active player and will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. His $52.6 million salary presents a significant financial commitment for any team, and the Lakers face questions about whether they can sustain their championship window around an aging star.

Despite his age, LeBron remains exceptional. Last season, he finished sixth in MVP voting and earned All-NBA Second Team honors — remarkable feats for a player his age. Stephen A. Smith recently noted on ESPN’s First Take: “It has become crystal clear that the weather and Hollywood is the only reason why LeBron is there. Why don’t you just come back to Cleveland to end your career? … If LeBron James came back to Cleveland, you’re the favorites to come out of the East.”

Cleveland Would Have Cap Problems

However, adding LeBron to the Cavaliers is no simple transaction. Cleveland’s salary cap situation limits their ability to absorb such a large contract without complicated multi-team trades. Such moves could require parting with key contributors like Garland or Allen, a difficult decision for the franchise.

Still, some argue Garland and Allen have yet to prove their postseason worth. Garland’s offensive talents often come at the cost of defensive liability and injury issues in the playoffs. Allen’s traditional center style has struggled in today’s fast, perimeter-oriented NBA. LeBron’s championship experience and leadership could provide the Cavaliers with the edge they have so far lacked.

This offseason, the Cavaliers have quietly bolstered their roster, acquiring Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro and welcoming back Larry Nance Jr., adding valuable depth and experience. Behind the scenes, Cleveland reportedly explored blockbuster trade possibilities, including potential deals involving Garland and even calls to LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul.

As LeBron’s time with the Lakers potentially winds down, the prospect of a Cleveland return for a final title chase grows more plausible. With the Cavs potentially drafting LeBron’s son Bryce James in 2026, a homecoming could offer a fitting close to one of the greatest careers in NBA history.

For the Lakers, the clock is ticking. Keeping LeBron may prove difficult as the Cavaliers position themselves to offer not just a competitive team, but a compelling narrative of legacy and hometown pride. Whether LeBron stays in Los Angeles or returns to Cleveland, his next chapter will be one of the most significant NBA stories in years.
