The Los Angeles Lakers have opened the 2025–26 season as one of the NBA’s early heavyweights. At 14–4 and holding the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, they’ve paired stability with momentum, cruising through NBA Cup group play without a loss and stacking wins behind improved depth and a clearer offensive identity. But as they prepare for a short homestand before hitting the road again, availability—not strategy—has become the focal point.

LeBron Ruled Out vs. Pelicans

Gotta have the Latest from LA + LUKA Mind-meld
LeBron James was initially listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans due to left foot injury management, the same nagging issue that sidelined him for part of last season. That uncertainty didn’t last long. According to Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Times, “LeBron James [has been] downgraded to OUT,” removing any suspense about his availability for the front end of the back-to-back.
James only recently returned to action after missing the first 14 games of the season with a nerve issue, making his debut on Nov. 18 and immediately providing stability. In four appearances, he averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.3 assists on strong efficiency. His absence leaves a major void as the Lakers look to extend their six-game winning streak.
Depth Tested Again
The Lakers will also be without rookie Bronny James, who is on assignment with South Bay, and veteran guard Marcus Smart remains on the injury report with back spasms after missing Friday’s win over Dallas.
Even with pieces moving in and out, the Lakers have leaned on balance and continuity to stay near the top of the West. That formula will be tested again against a Pelicans team searching for momentum of its own.
At 14–4, the Lakers remain one of the league’s most consistent squads. On Sunday, however, they’ll have to prove they can keep winning without their franchise cornerstone on the floor.
