Lakers Have Now Set A Target Date For LeBron James’ Return From Injury

The Los Angeles Lakers will begin the 2025-26 season without LeBron James, who is sidelined with a nerve injury. Initially ruled out for three to four weeks, the Lakers and James are now targeting a mid-November return, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

“October 30 would be the earliest that the Lakers would officially be reevaluating LeBron James,” Charania reported. “But it is expected he will need at least a few weeks after that point… LeBron will be taking a patient approach with this rehab from nerve injury. And so the ramp-up process for this will be a lot of basketball shape conditioning work.”

James, entering his unprecedented 23rd NBA season, will turn 41 a couple of months into the campaign. No player in NBA history has had a career this long, and his approach underscores the care required to extend his longevity.

Gotta have the Latest from LA + LUKA Mind-meld

The absence of James comes as the Lakers look to integrate Luka Doncic fully into the roster after his midseason trade from the Dallas Mavericks last year. L.A. opens its season on October 21 against the Golden State Warriors, marking the first of what could be at least 10 games without James. If the mid-November timeline holds, James would miss up to 14 games, including a critical five-game road trip starting November 8.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” said his agent Rich Paul. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future… He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

Last season, James played 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds, with shooting splits of 51.3% from the field, 37.6% from three, and 78.2% from the free-throw line. His leadership and experience remain a cornerstone of LA’s strategy, even as the team navigates the start of a new era alongside Doncic.

Patient Approach for Long-Term Success

The Lakers are taking a cautious approach to James’ recovery, balancing the need to return him to the court with the risks of rushing a 40-year-old superstar. The team’s medical staff will focus on basketball conditioning and gradual ramp-up, ensuring that James can perform at peak level once he rejoins the lineup.

For now, Los Angeles will rely on its depth, but James’ eventual return will provide a crucial boost to a team determined to contend for a championship while transitioning into a post-LeBron era.
