Lakers’ LeBron James Crowns New King As He Mulls The Inevitable

The future of LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers will be one of the defining narratives of the 2025-26 NBA season. In June, James picked up his $52.6 million player option, delaying speculation of retirement or a possible move in his 23rd year. At 40 years old, he enters the season without a player option for 2026, meaning he will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Rich Paul, James’ agent, made his client’s priorities clear in June: “LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.”

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka echoed the franchise’s commitment. “We would love it if LeBron’s story were that he retired a Laker,” Pelinka said. “That would be a positive story.”

Gotta have the Latest from LA + LUKA Mind-meld

This summer, the Lakers signaled a generational handoff by extending Luka Dončić for three years, $165 million, while also bringing in Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton. Dončić not only headlined the recruiting efforts but also emerged as the team’s centerpiece. A closed-door meeting with Dončić, Pelinka, and JJ Redick—without James—reinforced that shift.

Still, James views Dončić as motivation rather than competition. “The motivation to be able to play alongside [Dončić] every night, that’s super motivating,” James said during media day. “But as far as me weighing in on him and some other teammates on how far I go in my career—nah. It would be, literally my decision, along with my wife and kids.”

A Legacy Nearing Its Final Chapters

James will open his 23rd NBA season on Oct. 21 against Golden State, surpassing Vince Carter as the league’s longest-tenured player. Last year, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds while shooting efficiently from the field and three-point range.

He admitted the end is approaching. “The love of the game is still high. The love of the process is even higher,” James said. “I don’t have many days like this left.”

The Lakers, now led by Dončić, will lean on James’ experience as they chase another title. Whether he retires in purple and gold—or chooses a final chapter elsewhere—remains one of basketball’s biggest storylines.
