LeBron James, now 40 years old, enters the final season of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and continues to perform at an elite level. Despite his consistency, there is little consensus on where the King will play beyond this season.

On Monday, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps shared the results of a poll of 20 NBA coaches, scouts, and executives asking, “Where will LeBron James be at the start of the 2026-27 season?” The results were varied: seven predicted he would remain with the Lakers, five foresaw retirement, four expected a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, two projected a move to the Golden State Warriors, and one each suggested the Dallas Mavericks or Miami Heat.

The survey highlights the uncertainty surrounding James’ next steps, even as the Lakers appear to be building around Luka Dončić following his recent contract extension.

James’ agent, Rich Paul, added context in June during an interview with Shams Charania of ESPN. “LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul said. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all… We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

The comments underline James’ focus: maximizing his remaining seasons in pursuit of another NBA title. Joining Cleveland or Miami would mean homecomings, while a move to Golden State could provide another opportunity to team up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

Lakers Positioned for Success

The Lakers have invested in keeping themselves competitive, adding Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, and Jake LaRavia this offseason. A Western Conference scout told ESPN, “It just feels like it’s where it’s going to end,” referring to James’ likely conclusion with the Lakers. With the team positioned as a top championship contender, staying in Los Angeles may offer the least friction and the highest upside.

James himself has downplayed concerns about age. “Nah, age doesn’t matter,” he said in a recent interview. “Age is just a number for sure. Anytime I’m out there on the floor trying to give everything I got to my teammates, it’s about that win.”

Looking Ahead

While trade speculation quieted as the offseason progressed, the variety of predictions reflects the uncertainty of James’ next chapter. How he performs during the 2025-26 season, after turning 41, will likely influence his ultimate decision. For now, the Lakers remain his most probable landing spot, offering him a chance to chase a fifth championship and control the final act of a legendary career.
