Lakers Shakeup Roster With 4 Moves Ahead of New Season, Waive Promising Guard

With the 2025-26 NBA season tipping off Tuesday, the Los Angeles Lakers have finalized their roster, trimming down to 14 standard contracts and three two-way deals. In a move that surprised some fans, the Lakers waived four players: RJ Davis, Anton Watson, Augustas Marciulionis, and Nate Williams, as reported by ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.

RJ Davis: Preseason Standout, Roster Casualty

Davis, a former UNC standout, had impressed during the preseason, averaging 8.6 points on 50% shooting from both the field and three-point line in 16.1 minutes per game. He scored 10 or more points in three of five preseason games and had previously averaged 17.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in his final college season.

Despite his scoring ability, the Lakers’ roster constraints and depth at guard made it difficult for Davis to secure a spot. The team already has Bronny James in the rotation, and the Lakers prioritized defensive versatility and experience in their guard rotation. While Davis’ future with Los Angeles is likely to start in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, his talent makes him a candidate for a two-way or 10-day contract during the season.

Anton Watson, Augustas Marciulionis, and Nate Williams also found themselves on the waiver wire. Watson, a second-year player, and Williams, a three-year veteran, had limited impact in preseason action, while Marciulionis was an offseason addition. Each player could continue their development in the G League.

The Lakers’ roster decisions come after a 117-116 preseason loss to the Sacramento Kings. Head coach JJ Redick praised the integration of new additions like Gabe Vincent alongside Luka Doncic, Deandre Ayton, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura, emphasizing versatility and defensive capability.

Looking Ahead

The Lakers open the regular season at home on October 21 against the Golden State Warriors. They will be without LeBron James, who is recovering from a nerve injury, and await updates on backup big man Jaxson Hayes, sidelined with a wrist injury.

This roster trim marks the final step before the Lakers’ first full season with Luka Doncic and a revamped supporting cast. While Davis’ release is unfortunate, Los Angeles’ track record of developing young talent suggests the former Tar Heel could still find his NBA breakthrough in the months ahead.
