While Shohei Ohtani’s exceptional talent on the baseball field is undeniable, his Los Angeles Dodgers teammates have a different perspective on who holds the title of the team’s best athlete. Mookie Betts, they believe, reigns supreme.
Despite Ohtani’s historic achievements, including his unprecedented 50 home run and 50 stolen base season, an informal poll conducted by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal revealed that the Dodgers’ roster overwhelmingly favors Betts. Teammates cited Betts’s proven ability to excel in various sports and his seamless transition from the outfield to shortstop, albeit with some adjustments, as key factors in their decision.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts: “It’s just what God blessed me with.”

Chris Taylor, for instance, described Betts as “one of the greatest athletes I’ve ever played with, if not the greatest,” emphasizing his natural athleticism and versatility. Some Dodgers players acknowledged Ohtani’s physical prowess, particularly in speed and jumping ability, but Betts confidently asserted his superiority in overall coordination.
“Me,” Betts stated, “Not even close.” He further elaborated, “If we’re talking about does he run fast, does he jump high and stuff, Shohei would win that. But, as far as like, pure coordination skills, I don’t think it’s remotely close. I feel like it’s just what I do. It’s just what God blessed me with.”
However, Ohtani’s athletic achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. His three MVP awards, six All-MLB team selections, and his unique two-way dominance as a pitcher and hitter place him among baseball’s elite. While he is recovering from elbow surgery and has yet to return to the mound, his time with the Los Angeles Angels drew comparisons to Babe Ruth.
Ohtani’s 2024 season with the Dodgers further solidified his status as a generational talent. He became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, finishing with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. This remarkable feat earned him his first National League MVP award and his third overall MVP in four years, despite his current role as a designated hitter.
