Fresh from witnessing Roki Sasaki’s impressive pitching display on Tuesday, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ focus during spring training extended beyond the international talent. He also maintained a vigilant watch over a key reliever’s progress as the pitcher worked to return from an injury. This dual focus highlights the delicate balance Roberts must maintain, monitoring both emerging talent and the recovery of established players crucial to the Dodgers’ success.
Now, Roberts unveiled when he believes Evan Phillips will return to the mound. He shared where things stand health-wise with the relief option via Dodgers insider Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic Wednesday.
“Dave Roberts was watching Phillips’ bullpen session today and came away impressed,” Ardaya shared on X. “He will be facing hitters in Arizona while the Dodgers are in Tokyo.”
Los Angeles Dodgers Eyeing April Return For Evan Phillips

With Phillips set to remain in the United States during the Dodgers’ Tokyo Series on March 18th, the question naturally arises: when can the team expect his return to active duty? According to reports, Phillips is anticipated to rejoin the Dodgers’ bullpen sometime within the first half of April. This timeline suggests a cautious approach to his recovery, ensuring he’s fully prepared to contribute upon his return.
The 30-year-old reliever has been sidelined since the 2024 postseason, having sustained a minor tendon tear in his rotator cuff during the National League Championship Series. This injury prevented him from participating in the World Series, though he was present to witness LA’s five-game victory over the New York Yankees and subsequently joined the team’s championship parade.
Phillips’ journey began in August 2021, when he was claimed off waivers. His debut against the New York Mets saw him pitch nearly three innings of relief, earning his first win as a Dodger. In 2022, he further solidified his role, posting a 7-3 record and a remarkable 1.14 ERA. By 2024, he had accumulated a 5-1 record, 63 strikeouts, and 18 saves, showcasing his consistent performance.
If Phillips receives clearance for early April, he could potentially make his return against the Atlanta Braves, a matchup of National League playoff contenders. Alternatively, should his return be slightly delayed, he could take the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies during their series from April 4th to 6th.
