The Los Angeles Dodgers have added outfielder Esteury Ruiz to their roster, acquiring him from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Carlos Duran. Ruiz, who was recently designated for assignment by the Athletics, brings a notable speed element to the Dodgers, having led the American League with 67 stolen bases in 132 games.

Ruiz’s major league experience spans three seasons with the Padres, Brewers, and Athletics, during which he has compiled a .243/.297/.343 batting line, an 82 wRC+, and 73 stolen bases in 178 games. A left wrist strain limited his playing time last season, and his 2024 Triple-A stint with Las Vegas was brief, featuring three doubles and a stolen base in eight at-bats across two games, before his designation for assignment. He will now report to the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City.
In return, the Athletics receive Carlos Duran, a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher who impressed during Dodgers’ spring training. Duran recently pitched 4⅓ innings for Oklahoma City, striking out eight, in only his second Triple-A appearance. The Dominican Republic native, signed by the Dodgers in 2018, posted a 3.71 ERA across 19 minor league starts last season, with 73 strikeouts and 32 walks in 53⅓ innings.
To create roster space for Ruiz, the Dodgers moved Kyle Hurt to the 60-day injured list. Hurt, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the current season. Currently, seven of the Dodgers’ 11 injured players are on the 60-day IL.
Ruiz, 26, possesses two years and 29 days of major league service time and retains two option years, having used one in 2022. He began the 2025 season in Triple-A and has yet to utilize any of his five potential option assignments this year.
