Los Angeles Dodgers Expected To Make Long Term Commitment To Rising Star

Emmet Sheehan Forcing Dodgers’ Hand With Dominant Return From Tommy John

After months of careful rehab, Emmet Sheehan is proving that he’s ready for a permanent spot in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation.

The 25-year-old right-hander made his long-awaited 2025 season debut on June 18 against the San Diego Padres, his first Major League start since undergoing Tommy John surgery. Sheehan didn’t disappoint, allowing just one earned run on three hits over four efficient innings while striking out six and walking none.

Surprising Demotion, but Dodgers Long-Term Plan in Place

Despite the impressive outing, the Dodgers optioned Sheehan to Triple-A Oklahoma City the very next day. It was a puzzling move to some, but one that manager Dave Roberts explained was more about logistics than performance.

“We wanted to build Sheehan up to at least five innings before he returns,” Roberts said. “He’s much more physical now than he used to be. His glove-side command, the changeup, the breaking ball — he’s dominating with all of it. So I’m not surprised in the least.”

Sheehan is not eligible to return until July 4 unless an injury opens up a roster spot, but his recent performances suggest he won’t be in Triple-A for long.

Dominating in Oklahoma City

Since his brief return to the bigs, Sheehan has been lights-out in the minors. In his most recent Triple-A start, he tossed six perfect innings, racking up 13 strikeouts and 21 whiffs on just 73 pitches. It was a statement outing — the kind that demands attention from the Major League staff.

According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Roberts confirmed that Sheehan will return to the Dodgers’ rotation after one final tune-up with Oklahoma City. With the rotation still reeling from injuries, his timing couldn’t be better.

Sheehan’s calm presence, polished arsenal, and post-surgery strength make him a key piece for the Dodgers moving forward. Whether in Oklahoma City or at Dodger Stadium, he’s making it clear — he’s ready.
