Los Angeles Dodgers’ New Ace Snubbed, Former Team Ignored Pitcher In Free Agency

Blake Snell’s journey through the National League West has taken another turn, this time landing him with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a five-year, $182 million contract. This move follows his previous stints with the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants, but Snell revealed that his departure from the Giants was marked by an unexpected lack of communication.

“The Giants didn’t even talk to me,” Snell told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It was surprising—I thought they really liked me. I know Bob loves me, and I’m really close with Logan and Chappy. So I was shocked. I thought they’d come after me right away. I really liked it there. I was happy there. But they never even said anything to me. I texted (manager) Bob (Melvin) and he didn’t reply, and Bob always replies to me, so I kind of had a feeling. But it was weird, especially with all the other teams that were interested in me.”

While Snell’s relationship with Giants manager Bob Melvin is now amicable, it was Snell who initiated contact after opting out of his contract on November 1st. His 2024 season with the Giants was characterized by a slow start, attributed to missing most of spring training, followed by a dominant second half. During this period, he went undefeated, posting a 1.45 ERA and holding opponents to a .133 batting average. Snell’s performance underscored his desire for a contract reflecting his true value, highlighted by his first career complete game—a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2nd.

Snell expressed his preference to remain in California and was surprised by the Giants’ silence. However, he is now focused on his new chapter with the Dodgers. He is participating in a full spring training and is eager to contribute to the team’s pursuit of a World Series title.
