The Los Angeles Dodgers have been wrecked by injuries so far this season, and the hits kept coming today.
During manager Dave Roberts’ time with the media ahead of the Dodgers’ World Series rematch with the New York Yankees, he announced that starting shortstop Mookie Betts stubbed his toe during the off day and would be undergoing X-rays.
But that wasn’t the bad news.
He then announced that reliever Evan Phillips, who has been on the IL, would be undergoing Tommy John Surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
Evan Phillips is undergoing Tommy John surgery, Dave Roberts said. Tried playing catch a couple days ago and it “didn’t go well.” His season is over.

Dodgers Reliever Evan Phillips To Miss Rest Of Season
Roberts told the media that Phillips tried playing catch a couple of days ago and it “didn’t go well.” It was just two days ago that Roberts told reporters that “it was starting to get a little concerning” in regards to Phillips’ recovery.
Now, a decision has been made to shut him down and perform Tommy John surgery.
Yesterday, the team acquired former All-Star closer Alexis Diáz from the Reds. Diáz has struggled mightily this year, posting a 12.00 ERA before being sent down to Triple-A, but now this move makes a lot of sense, considering they knew the future of Phillips’ availability this season.

Unfortunately, this is something that probably could have been decided at the end of last season, which would have put Phillips six months into his recovery. Now he will be beginning his year-long-plus recovery from this point.
Phillips was 1 of 14 pitchers on the injured list, but now he will be taken off the active 40-man roster. He missed the World Series last year due to a torn rotator cuff, and now he will miss whatever title run the Dodgers go on this year as well.
