Despite being the reigning Home Run Derby champion, Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernández will not return to defend his crown in 2025. As first reported by David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports, Hernández told the team he’s opting out of this summer’s event, citing concerns about injury and a desire to stay fresh for a playoff push.
“With the injury that I had earlier this year, I don’t want to risk anything,” Hernández told Vassegh. “So I’m going to stay put and not participate.”

Hernández spent time on the injured list in May with a left groin strain, and though he’s returned to form — slashing .305 with 33 RBIs through the first 32 games — he’s clearly keeping the long-term picture in mind.
It’s a decision rooted in maturity and team-first thinking. After hitting 33 home runs during his first season in Los Angeles and earning the affection of Dodger fans everywhere, Hernández has become a critical piece of the Dodgers’ high-powered lineup. His strong start had many speculating about a repeat Derby appearance, especially considering his electric win in 2024, where he edged Bobby Witt Jr. in the finals.
But even before this season, Hernández hinted that a return to the Derby would only come under the right circumstances.
“Maybe I’m gonna do it again. Maybe. If I’m an All-Star, maybe. I’m not gonna go over there just for the [Home Run Derby],” he said earlier this year on Mookie Betts’ Bleacher Report show.
While fans might be disappointed not to see the defending champ take center stage, Dodgers supporters can take comfort in knowing Hernández is prioritizing October over exhibition fireworks — and the organization wouldn’t have it any other way.
